Is Your Life Veering Off Track?
Life is often said to be a journey. But when it comes to everyday living, we don’t always know how to get back on track when we’ve drifted or become overwhelmed. Should we be paying more attention to our satnav?
When we set off on any kind of trip – perhaps a few days away walking in the Lakes – we’re usually clear on two things: where we’re starting from, and where we’re trying to get to. We keep an eye on road signs or use a satnav to stay on track. Without those reference points, we’d likely end up somewhere we never intended
But when it comes to the journey of our lives, that clarity isn’t always there. Many of us live in a state of near-constant busyness – caught up in habits, expectations, and responsibilities. We often forget to check in with how we are. Our thoughts, feelings and even physical state can drift out of awareness. And when we lose that connection, we may find ourselves stuck in places we hadn’t meant to be: overwhelmed, overworked, tense, or simply going through the motions
Noticing Where We Are
If we want to know how to get back on track in life, we need to pay attention to where we’re starting from
The first step in finding direction is learning to notice where we actually are. Not just physically, but internally. Are we calm or restless? Energised or depleted?
Our bodies offer signs all the time – tight shoulders, shallow breathing, tension in the belly or jaw. These are like our personal road signs, offering valuable information. When we pay attention, we can begin to respond rather than react, with more kindness and clarity
Reconnecting with What Matters
Learning how to get back on track in life isn’t about pushing harder – it’s about slowing down and checking in
The second step is tuning into what truly matters to us. We don’t need a five-year plan – just a sense of direction. What brings us a feeling of ease, connection or purpose? What kind of life do we want to shape?
These questions help us steer gently towards something meaningful, even amid the unpredictability of life
A Chance to Course-Correct
If life is a journey, then learning to check in with ourselves now and again can really help us see where we’re headed. We may then find we’re able to course-correct gently if we’ve drifted off track
Of course, we can’t control everything. Life will always throw us the unexpected. But when we’re in touch with our inner world, we’re more able to meet life’s turns with self-compassion – and to keep moving forward with intention and care
