My Journey to Living and Loving Mindfully
After reading about the Alexander Technique, I felt inspired to find out more and started having lessons in 2004. I assumed there was something wrong with my back as I was unable to sit for more than 15 minutes without pain. However, in time I discovered that I was sitting (walking, bending etc) in a way that was making it very difficult for my muscles to support me. Lessons showed me that I was adding unnecessary effort and tension to everyday movements and postures. The Alexander Technique taught me how to move and use my body in a more natural, easy way. Now I can sit for long periods (if I need to) with no discomfort.
One of the things I liked about the Alexander Technique was that it helped me to feel more present and grounded. After qualifying in 2008, it made sense to me to continue my training in mindfulness so that I could extend the support I offer clients. I particularly enjoy the kindness that is the very foundation of mindfulness practices. Instead of the habitual self-criticism and judgement, it offers a way of turning towards our experience with gentleness, friendliness and curiosity. This can really transform our experience
Both mindfulness and Alexander Technique are evidence-based, holistic approaches towards better health. I believe that we can all have more say in our own physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. It’s not about trying to be perfect. It’s about being more authentic, more alive and discovering the ease that is available to us in any moment
